Single Family Renovation AH710
Project: Single Family Remodeling & Addition
Location: Arlington Heights, IL
Progress Update: 4.15.15
Status: Bidding and Construction Phase; Anticipating Summer 2015 Construction
This project entails the complete renovation of an existing 100+ year old farmhouse in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Many of the existing homes features were functionally obsolete, most notably the kitchen and the way it was situated relative to the back door. Our client requested that we reconfigure the rear entry providing a more elegant way to get into the home without going through the kitchen. Further we were asked to enlarge and reconfigure the kitchen as well as add a screen porch with direct access from the kitchen to a patio in the back yard. Complicating the task of designing this renovation was, to the greatest degree possible, keeping within the existing roof lines and footprint of the home and reconciling the three-and-one-half foot difference in height between the back door at grade and the elevation of the main floor of the house.
Only adding 150 square feet our solution entailed providing a rear entry with a mud room and an interior stair leading up to a entry gallery at the main level of the home, as well as down to the existing basement. Once one arrives at the gallery level, the main level of the home, tuning left leads to a new powder room; going straight ahead leads to the main portion of the first floor, the dining and living room; and turning right one enters the newly expanded and renovated kitchen and back porch.
