Custom Builder Magazine: Competition
Third place winner of a nationwide design competition sponsored by Custom Builder Magazine.
THE CHALLENGE (from the competition program):
Design a one-of-a-kind custom home on a suburban lot for a multigenerational household. Total square footage (finished and unfinished) for this single-family detached home cannot exceed 3,500 square feet on three levels: basement, main floor and second floor. The basement will be at least partly finished as living space and therefore requires some type of egress. In this particular community, there is a height restriction of 30 feet.
The clients are a couple in their late 40s and early 50s. This is the second marriage for both spouses, and they have three children, ages 5, 15 and 18. The oldest child will be leaving for college next year. Also living in the home are the wife’s parents, who are in their 80s. The clients work outside the home most of the time but occasionally bring work home, so they require dedicated office space. Both spouses enjoy preparing and cooking meals together. One of the grandparents uses a wheelchair; the other is able to walk but has some difficulty climbing in and out of the bathtub, turning on faucets, etc.
